New Employees Are Prime Targets for Phishing – Here’s How to Stay Safe
The Growing Threat
What’s Going On?
If you are new to the company, welcome aboard! But heads up: cybercriminals love new employees.
A new study shows that 71% of new hires are more likely to fall for phishing attacks during their first 90 days on the job. That is nearly 3 out of 4 people. Why? Because attackers know you are still getting familiar with how things work, and they exploit that.

🤖 Spear Phishing Targets New Hires Right Away
🔍 Example: Research by BW Cyber found that there is typically a greater than 50% chance a new hire will be targeted by a spear phishing attack within their first week on the job—often triggered by simply updating LinkedIn or publicly announcing their new position.
In one reported case, a newly onboarded employee received a phishing email claiming to be from HR within days of starting—requesting immediate “verification” of their login credentials. Because the email referenced terms like “onboarding completion” and “mandatory form,” the new hire clicked—putting the company at risk before they even felt familiar with internal procedures.
This shows the threat is real and immediate, even on Day One.
