Building a Secure Foundation: A Ground Up Approach
In Paul's last presentation on VoIP Security; he touched on
a very important point that one should not attempt to implement a
VoIP solution if the fundamentals of your network are not
secure.
Additionally, the downturn in the economy offers IT an
unprecedented opportunity to get back to the often neglected basics
of Network Security. This presentation covers the fundamental
elements of building a secure foundation for network security -
from the ground up.
Paul starts with reinforcing that any good design is the result
of a well thought-out plan, with business driving the policy. He
then discusses several common, cost effective methods for ensuring
the foundation of a secure environment. Paul then expresses his
thoughts on using network policies along with segmentation for
security and accountability, while at the same time improving
performance; essentially eliminating 90% of the threat
immediately.
We then look at how the endpoints are typically ignored, yet
pose the greatest risk to an organization. Paul then addresses how
Intranet encryption is becoming more of a reality in today's
corporate networks. Finally, the line between traditional Spam and
Malware is being blurred; spam is no longer just a nuisance.
As Paul brings it all together, he advises that trying to
out-think hackers on their delivery methods will simply lock you in
an arms race. Some simple approaches can go a long way to ensure a
secure network.
No holy grail offered here - Attendees will walk away with an
understanding of the fundamental elements in building a secure
foundation and the underlying issues that plague network
security.
